Canvas Icons (DIY)
If you have found yourself wanting to create a
Prayer Corner
and therein maybe include some Icons,
you may have noticed:
Icons are (understandably) not cheap. (So obtaining will take a while).
You may have trouble finding the icon you really want. (So even if you do get one, it may not be the exact one you want).
Enter…
Canvas Icons!
Obviously… these hand-made canvas icon prints are not on the same level as a hand-crafted, hand-painted Icon.
These DIY Icons are for the purpose of creating a meaningful and affordable prayer corner.
And so, without further ado, here are the
Materials and Instructions
3x3 Canvas
These are found at Wal-Mart craft section, or Amazon
If you want, you could experiment with larger canvases as well.
Acrylic Paint
I paint my canvas black for a solid / non-distracting look.
Feel free to experiment with different colors, or painting the exposed sides different patterns (I’m not that talented).
Paper (regular or cardstock)
I print on regular paper.
BUT regular paper tends to wrinkle when you use wet glue and the mod-podge.
So… maybe try cardstock?
Glue
Once the paint on your canvas is dry, you can glue your image to it.
I use Fabrifix, BUT a glue-stick may be better for this project (the Icon will be Mod-Podged after gluing).
Mod-Podge
Once you have glued your image (and it’s dry and secure on the canvas), you can Mod-Podge.
Mod-Podge helps to seal and protect the image and canvas.
Put on as many coats as you wish, just be sure it’s mostly dry before apply more coats.
Additional Possible Matierals
Mini Easel
If you want to display your icon on a mini easel, consider staining!
Staining will give the finished product a different look (the easels come as unfinished pine)
Shadow Box Picture Frame
A shadow box can give you additional options for displaying your Icon. Maybe you want a plain backdrop, or a photo or painting (print) backdrop?
You can include 3-D items, as well: greenery, lights, maybe a rosary - possibilities are endless. :)
